Another fun day with what I call the Gen 3 CZ 457. The build is now complete. Today’s targets are on the right. Here’s the summary.
Today: 100 shots were fired. Five different cartridges of.20 shots each at 50 yards. The groups were measured and the five different groups averaged. The 100 shot average was 0.96 inches. How did that compare to the other two generation builds?
Gen 1 – OEM barrel and stock (trigger spring changed) – 100 shot average – 1.32 inches
Best group – SK Pistol Match – 1.13 inches
Worst Group – SK Long Range Match – 1.60 inches
Gen 2 – OEM barrel, MDT Field Stock – 100 shot average – 0.96 inches
Best Group – SK Rifle Match – 0.70 inches
Worst group – Eley Biathlon – 1.14 inches
Gen 3 – IBI barrel, MDT Stock – 100 shot average – .96 inches
Best group – SK Pistol Match – 0.77 inches
Notes
As I moved from Gen 1 to Gen 3, the groups got better.
Gen 2 vs gen 3: while the 100 shot averages were the same – 0.96 inches – there were two things that indicated the IBI barrel outperformed the OEM barrel in my tests. I must reshoot.
a. SK Pistol Match (Gen 3) – the 20 shot average was 0.77 inches. Just slightly smaller than Gen 2 at 0.81 inches, but the cluster is what every shooter wants. It is a single hole – except for that outlier. It might have been the wind. It might have been me. It might have been the cartridge. If you eliminate it, the average drops to 0.53 inches. But I couldn’t do that. The group stands at 0.77 inches. No excuses. Either way, .77 inches is good for a 20 shot group.
b. Four of the five Gen 3 targets are smaller than the Gen 2. Only one cartridge – SK Rifle Match – caused the average to increase. Gen 2 Rifle Match was 0.70 inches. Gen 3 Rifle Match was 1.00 inches. A difference of 0.030 inches
